With most of us heading home for the holidays, it's inevitable that there are going to be those hilarious moments with parents and grandparents whenever the subject of computers or the Internet comes up. For instance, whenever my dad wants me to check his email (he's in phase two of checking his own email, I swear), he says "spin up my www." I'm sure we'll all have a lot of stories to share after the holidays, but to get the ball rolling here is a cute one from TeamSugar user GirlC.
The other day my dad called me. "I keep reading about something and I was hoping you could explain it to me," he said. "Let me get the article." I wait while I hear papers being shuffled around."Okay got it. What's wiffy?"
"Wiffy?"
"Yeah, Wiffy. They're talking about it and the Internet and my cellphone."
"Wiffy? Spell it for me," I asked. "W-i-f-i, and there's a dash between the first i and f." After I finished laughing (phone on mute), I let him know it's pronounced, "Why-Feye."

I used to work on a helpdesk answering phone calls about how to use a computer application. One night I was getting ready to sign off when I took my last phone call for the day. It was a nice sounding older man that I just couldn't resist helping. As we took the next probably 1/2 an hour just figuring out what he was exactly asking--he needed to change his preferences for something. "Oh, ok that's easy enough Mr. So and So, first please right click in the black background of that page" 5-6- seconds go by with silence. "Hello?" "Can you please repeat that" (he was hard of hearing i guess). "Please right click" I then heard the banging away of keyboard keys and him mumbling "C---L---I---C---K, ok I just wrote click" I died laughing!
1My mom calls her e-mail address her "website" lol. That wiffy story was pretty funny though!! Oh, and we can't forget about my granny who thinks my cell phone is an iPod.
"What are you doing? Texting on that iPod?"
2LOL! That *so* sounds like my family! In fact, I'm taking my laptop with me for the holidays so my mother can see the wedding pictures that various people have taken. I have them all posted on my website, but she can't figure out how to get to my site, muchless find the pictures ... so I figured this would be easier! LOL
3Well of course, if they were "talking" about it, they would not have called if wiffy.

BUT: there are a LOT of people who aren't on the tubes, or just getting there. Patience with those who are less smart than us/me/you/ whatever.

I've renamed the wireless connection at home "whiffy."
8My mom still uses a 56k modem that connects over the land line... the other day she had called me on her house phone and I was giving her instructions on how to sign on... and then I heard the modem dialing noise and then we both realized she was trying to talk to me and connect to the internet on the same line. (We don't have call waiting on the land line at home.) That was pretty funny.

10When I got my laptop earlier this year, my Dad asked me, "Does it have Wiffy, so it can connect to our home network?"
11I replied, "No, but it has Wi-Fi."
We then got into an argument about it, and wouldn't talk for a couple of hours. After that, I successfully hooked my laptop up on my own, and searched up an audio of the word 'Wi-Fi.'
The way I pronounced it was right. Parents scare me sometimes.
