Last night, I had the pleasure of chatting with my mom over IM, which is always a rare treat that's full of surprises.
After putting a smiley face emoticon at the end of a sentence, she was determined to get in on the smiley-face action, and create one herself. Her first-ever, smiley face emoticon was achieved. And thankfully, I had it all documented in our IM conversation. Great job, mom!
And don't even begin to ask me how she knows what OMG is!
Be sure to post all your hilarious stories in my funny family-tech stories group!

...oh, and what IM is that? i like how it looks.
That is the cutest story ever!!
otaku it looks like iChat (comes on macs)
Too adorable Geek! I'm still trying to get my mother to stop shouting in emails, let alone get her to chat!
Yes it's iChat!
Just this afternoon my dad said the following in an e-mail:
"Sux getting old, lol."
I just about died laughing.
He also uses smiley faces sometimes
in his e-mails, and he also put :
: at one point. Oh, parents.
haha i have a similar convo from gchat:
me: yikes have fun
love you!
look a heart!
<3
mom: luv ya - love the things tell me again how to do them
me: < 3
no space
mom: does this just work in here or anywhere
i put in <3
omg
mom: do the face
me: =)
anyway it was my mom saying "omg!" after i showed her the hearts in gchat and then demanding "do the face too". i love technology!
Totally cute chat. If only my mom knew how to use a computer. It would save me minutes on my cell.
When my mom first learned to text, she didn't learn how to switch the completed words from T9. That didn't bother her, I guess. She was constantly sending me the texts exactly how they showed up. They never made any sense.
Bethina- that's ridiculously cute!
That picture is hilarious and wonderful!
My boss has two young daughters in elementary school and one day I saw a post it note on her desk that said:
"Type to girls
Smiley Face =
Colon End Parentheses"
It was the only way that she was able to remember
I taught my mom all the "secret" emoticons in Skype like the middle finger, swearing, squirrel, etc. and she uses them regularly in our conversations. She always gives me a "kiss" and a "hug" in the morning when I am chatting to her on Skype before I go to work since I'm 8 hours ahead of her.
Your mom is so cute!
My grandmother just got a laptop, and she's been sending everyone e-mails nonstop. Her favorite face? (^_^)
SHE USES IT AFTER ABOUT EVERY SENTENCE.
LOL! That is adorable! My mom still calls me right after she sends me an email... "I just sent you an email!" "Okay... i'll read it when i get home." "Well, it's not important I just said...." then she proceeds to read me the email over the phone
That's so funny because just last night I was talking to my mom on the phone and she spent 30 minutes bragging about how she learned how to forward an email all by herself.
I couldn't stop smiling the whole time... it was so cute!
Haha, thanks everyone! I'm sure there will be lots more stories like this to share
Love
your family stories as well!
i looove this story! way tooo cute!!!
Haha. Thats cute! Mine aren't really that long. Just simple little things.
- ctrl+a (they freak out)
- accidentally press F11 and don't know why they can't exit.
- learn the scroll on the mouse.
I'm amazingly computer savvy, so it's funny watching that stuff.
funny. that's like when my mom decided to text me cuz she was too made at me to talk. hilarious. she used omg. i guess we can thank att for that! haha.
haha!! my mom hasn't graduated to IM just yet. Or texting. She can barely figure out how to answer her phone, and is always asking me things like "How do I look at the last number that called me?" Oh, Mom. I did get her playing Rock Band though! Hilarious.
my.Mom.texts.,.LIKE.this?
Hahaha weffie!! That's funny.
My mom has texted my brother only once but she's really computer savvy so I don't have to worry about that part. The only problem I have with her is when she doesn't punctuate and I can't figure out if she's being sarcastic or mother-like.
Hahaha. This sounds like my parents!
It takes them (working together, mind you) 20 minutes to text "yes" or "no."
Aww that's cute!
Oh I wish my mum was like that. Somewhere along the line my mum picked up on txt spk and I can't stand it. I'm sure she uses her own version though because sometimes it takes me a while to figure out what she's saying.
She's no where near using chat though. She's only just mastered emailing.
My mother-in-law is hilarious though. When my work were selling off old comps, I got one for her because she just want to email and look up the odd site. I originally set it up upstairs for her because that's where she put her desk, but then she remembered that her boradband connection was downstairs. As I was preparing to move it, she was worried that no one would be able to send her any emails. Then when her monitor needed replacing, she was worried about losing all her files and internet!
can any one help me please coz i have tried ever thing if anyone get any idears for me i am 10 year old and i have a big brother 2 little sisters and a big sister please can you help me i need it and so does my mum she needs fun and a laugh please
